Simon Lewis is a Melbourne-based musician and composer with an eclectic musical background in performance, composition and production. In 1987 he travelled to Europe for nine months, spending four of these studying music at the University Of East Anglia in the UK. He continued his musical studies in 1988 at The University of Melbourne majoring in jazz piano and composition, and graduating in 1991. During his studies Simon was exposed to a wide range of musical idioms and cultures. He performed in a number of groups including jazz big bands and small jazz ensembles, various choirs, African drum and dance, Balinese gamelan, South American music groups, experimental and electronic ensembles, funk and rock bands, and wind symphony.


Southern Water, Simon’s first solo album, was released in September 1992. It is a suite of instrumental soundscapes inspired by the great southern coast of Victoria. His second album, Southern Dreaming, was released in September 1993, and continues Simon's love affair with this region. Simon composed, performed, and produced both albums, as well as recording the natural sounds at selected locations along the Great Ocean Road, including the Port Campbell National Park and Otways Forest. Since their release, both albums were regularly featured by ABC FM on Jaroslav Kovaricek’s Dreamtime program.
His music is marketed nationally by the ABC & EMI, and Qantas regularly use selected tracks for their ambient music channel on domestic and international flights.


Since 1993, television documentaries have become a strong focus for Simon who has written music for four ABC-TV 'Wildscreen' programs. He also composed the music for Niagra's Gold, a 50 minute film documentary produced by Moonlit Films which has sold worldwide.
September 1994 saw the release of Southern Mystique, which was launched with a live performance of each composition by a 20-piece orchestra at the George Fairfax Studio of the Melbourne Arts Centre. This evocative and inspirational album completed Simon's trilogy of southern soundscapes. In November '94, Southern Mystique received the Herald-Sun Benchmark Award for the year's most outstanding ambient CD .


In 1995 Simon collaborated with five talented vocalists to produce Southern Christmas which reflects the unique experience of an Australian Christmas.


Presence, his fifth album, was released in late 1996, and captures the breadth of Simon's film scoring and his ability to evoke a strong emotional response through his music. His latest recording Through My Eyes was released in April 1998. Critics have described his style as a blend of jazz instincts with classical precision, and the music as evocative, captivating and spiritual.


Simon Lewis Band released their debut EP ‘If Only’ on 1st September 2001 and is currently working on songs for the album to be released in 2002 as well as a new ambient/electronic project. He is performing regualarly around Melbourne with the new band playing their hybrid style of electronic/folk/world/pop, producing songs for other artist’s, and writing soundtracks .
