Lewis is a Melbourne-based musician and composer with an eclectic musical
background in performance, composition and production. In 1987 he travelled
to Europe for nine months, spending four of these studying music at
the University Of East Anglia in the UK. He continued his musical studies
in 1988 at The University of Melbourne majoring in jazz piano and composition,
and graduating in 1991. During his studies Simon was exposed to a wide
range of musical idioms and cultures. He performed in a number of groups
including jazz big bands and small jazz ensembles, various choirs, African
drum and dance, Balinese gamelan, South American music groups, experimental
and electronic ensembles, funk and rock bands, and wind symphony.
Southern Water, Simons first solo album, was released in September
1992. It is a suite of instrumental soundscapes inspired by the great
southern coast of Victoria. His second album, Southern Dreaming, was
released in September 1993, and continues Simon's love affair with this
region. Simon composed, performed, and produced both albums, as well
as recording the natural sounds at selected locations along the Great
Ocean Road, including the Port Campbell National Park and Otways Forest.
Since their release, both albums were regularly featured by ABC FM on
Jaroslav Kovariceks Dreamtime program.
His music is marketed nationally by the ABC & EMI, and Qantas regularly
use selected tracks for their ambient music channel on domestic and
international flights.
Since 1993, television documentaries have become a strong focus for
Simon who has written music for four ABC-TV 'Wildscreen' programs. He
also composed the music for Niagra's Gold, a 50 minute film documentary
produced by Moonlit Films which has sold worldwide.
September 1994 saw the release of Southern Mystique, which was launched
with a live performance of each composition by a 20-piece orchestra
at the George Fairfax Studio of the Melbourne Arts Centre. This evocative
and inspirational album completed Simon's trilogy of southern soundscapes.
In November '94, Southern Mystique received the Herald-Sun Benchmark
Award for the year's most outstanding ambient CD .
In 1995 Simon collaborated with five talented vocalists to produce Southern
Christmas which reflects the unique experience of an Australian Christmas.
Presence, his fifth album, was released in late 1996, and captures the
breadth of Simon's film scoring and his ability to evoke a strong emotional
response through his music. His latest recording Through My Eyes was
released in April 1998. Critics have described his style as a blend
of jazz instincts with classical precision, and the music as evocative,
captivating and spiritual.

September 2001 and is currently working on songs for the album to be
released in 2002 as well as a new ambient/electronic project. He is
performing regualarly around Melbourne with the new band playing their
hybrid style of electronic/folk/world/pop, producing songs for other
